Burning Sheriff

Moving on to another BITs session! Tom technically needs some work yet, but I'm still posting comments in his BITs discussion, and you can too. For now, though, we have a new antagonist who has survived for one game without the Count Tristam riding out to cut him down: The thoroughly vile new sheriff. Brent's got his lifepaths all worked out, and he'll have a google page for him shortly which I will post with the other non-player characters.

So! This is one of the few important characters introduced who are not one of the players' relationships, but really I don't have any better an idea of who he is than anyone else. All I know is that he's just as ugly inside as he is out, always looking for an opportunity to be cruel to others (hence the predatory trait.) The Prince Gerard saw that this man was not encumbered by morality, whose loyalty was bought simply by being given an opportunity to practice cruelty. The Prince also knows that the sheriff is not a mere sociopath. Having at least a masters degree from the school of hard knocks, this man is opportunistic and shrewd, perfectly suited to retrieving the Prince's tax money at any cost. That's what I get, anyway! But let me hear everyone else's impressions.

There's also the small matter of his demonic possession (Oh die of fate, you are supreme!) I'll have to talk more about that with Brent, so we can get an idea of what the rules are like for that. I would almost rather his possession be very subtle, and perhaps he isn't even aware of his metaphysical affliction. I dunno. That's also up for debate.

This guy's beliefs should be pretty grimy, but I have no idea where to begin. I don't see this guy as having very ambitious goals; he just wants to be able to do anything he wants to whomever he wants to do it to. But, there can still be goals derived from that. Maybe something like, "I will always have my way; I'll teach a hard lesson to anyone who thinks otherwise." I also see something reflecting his disinterest in noble stations. How about, "Prince Gerard is the only noble worth respecting, the rest are stuffed shirts."

What has everyone else got?

"Prince Gerard is the only noble worth respecting; all the rest are soft and worthless"

Here's a few instincts:
"Never turn down a bribe"
"Never miss an opportunity to be unnecessarily cruel"

And just so we've got it on record how possession works:
He gets one trait from the daemon list in the monster burner. We come up with BITs for the possessor and when they come into conflict with the sergeant's, there's an opposed Will roll to see whose wins.

That is awesome. Man, that is wonderful. I don't see him coming into conflict with his daemon too often, but we'll see what kinds of beliefs we come up with for it.

Otherwise, I do like the rewording of that belief. The name works; I can groove with Roger the Pike.

As for his other beliefs, well... I'll think about them. Anyone have any ideas about what they want his Daemon to be like? I thought it would be cool if the Daemon caused Roger to eat human flesh.

Well that totally fits with his namesake. The standard daemon beliefs are "We are Righteous; dissent is no crime.", "We will be avenged." and "Men are fools, and are to be used." Of the three, I think only the last is interesting enough to keep for Pike's daemon. As for instincts, I'm not sure any of the default ones are worth keeping.

Oh, man - maybe his Daemon has the Devourer trait:
"This monster has a tendency to eat anything - soil, stone, wood, metal and flesh. He is indiscriminate in his choices, and in fact cannot help himself from sampling his surroundings. Add +1 VA to bite attacks."

There's got to be something that relates to his MO. Maybe, "Violence and fear are the only sure ways of controlling someone." Not very actionable? Hell, he's an NPC who'll bite the dust in the next session, so I'm not too hung up on it.

As for the instinct, maybe, "Always look around while I'm talking." He does have that creepy wall-eye.

Has everyone moved on from this but me? XD
